Skincare Science Project
Starting today (april 22nd) I will be incorporating AHA.BHA.PHA serum into my skincare routine.
A little background before we begin:
AHAs (Alpha hydroxy acids) work the surface layer of the skin; the epidermis. It dissolves and exfoliates the dead skin cells and evens out skintone.
Common AHAs in skincare:
- citric acid
- mandelic acid
- lactic acid
- glycolic acid
- malic acid
BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) have antibacterial properties and smaller molecules to penetrate deeper into the epidermis layer. These BHAs are great for unclogging pores.
Common BHAs:
- salicylic acid (most common)
- beta-hydroxybutanoic acid (uncommon)
- tropic acid (uncommon)
- trethocanic acid (uncommon)
PHAs (polyhydroxy acids) as their name may indicate had many (poly) parts to their structure. Their larger molecules don't penetrate deeply into the skin due to their size so work on the epidermal layer by evening skin tone and preventing blemishes. Perfect for sensitive skin.
Common PHAs:
- lactobionic acid
- galactose
- maltobionic acid
- gluconolactone
Plan of action:
First week - monday and thursday.
Second - fourth week - Monday, Wednesday, Friday (aiming for every other day)
